Just before New Years I joined up with Rick, Dave and Zach on an exploratory tour into the northern Eagles Nest Wilderness. After a long sled approach we skinned out along Elliot Ridge and skied off Meridian Peak before exploring the Cataract Creek basin a bit in search of some bonus turns. With summer dwindling, the Colonol and I wanted to get in a solid gravel ride. Ben wanted to see what this whole gravel bike craze was all about, so I lent him my Trek Domane for his virgin drop bar ride – might as well start out with a 57 mile, 5200 foot outing right? A 30 second test ride around his neighborhood in sandles the evening before was all he needed apparently. “I know how to ride a bike” was his justification as he sped through the street in fading light. It’s no secret that this winter has been a great one in Colorado and is currently showing no signs of slowing down as we are now into April and it just keeps on snowing. The statewide snowpack sits at 139% of average as of April 3rd with the graph trending almost identically to the historic season of 2019. It’s the type of year that has one wondering just how long we’ll be skiing for given the snow totals to date. Read more…

With the High Lonesome finally in the rearview and to kick off the month of August, Anna-Lisa, Jax and I headed out for a route in the Gores that’s sort of evolved into a bit of a local classic in the Snow Pass loop. We’ve made it an unofficial goal of ours to visit every named lake in Eagle County that can be reached via a trail, and this loop happens to collect three of them in two completely different drainages.
