Anna-Lisa and I got an invite from two friends of ours to head up a short 14er over the weekend. Huron Peak was the easy decision as the standard route is only 5 miles and 3,100 vertical round trip. Al and I met Katie and David at their place in Denver at 5am where we piled into one vehicle for the drive to the TH. Two and a half hours later we arrived at the upper Winfield parking lot. Finding a parking spot wasn’t easy, it was immediately apparent we’d be hiking Huron along with a full swing summer 14er crowd…quite the contrast to my trip up Huron a month ago, on that day it was just Matt and I for miles…
At this point we were a bit concerned with the weather as some ominous looking clouds had begun forming to our west. We decided to push on to the 13,400′ saddle and evaluate our summit chances from there. By the time we reached the saddle the weather had taken a turn for the better, and we were on the summit 20 minutes later…
We lounged on the summit and ate lunch, the views of the central Sawatch never get old…
After 45 minutes on the summit we began the descent. The weather held great for the rest of the day, we were back at the truck enjoying a Rolling Rock by 2pm.
One the way home we took a short detour up Highway 82 to to admire the awesome Lake Creek Rapids. They’re just sick this time of year…
All in all a super fun day, thanks Katie and David for dragging us along!
